Apparently a growing number of designers are attempting their hand at the t-shirt business. I’ve noticed this to become growing trend during the last couple of years. There are so many incredible t-shirt lines out there, therefore many apparel companies to contend with, it appears as though an overwhelmingly daunting job for a young designer to begin in the clothing business. Well not always, if you are taking things one step at any given time, produce a plan, and tackle each task with the end goal at heart getting the foot in the door in the t-shirt industry might be easier than you believe.
This is not articles that will help you set up a clothing line with your existing designs. There exists a good amount of info on the market already for the crowd. It becomes an article on an absolute beginner who would like to give Customize T-Shirt a go. We’re going to consider how to start with inspiration to your first design, where and how to print it, along with a little marketing and self-promo once and for all measure.
Being a designer I’m sure that you may have handled a task that did not float your boat. An issue that bored you, or perhaps a subject matter which simply failed to get your interest. It requires the fun away from work. However, as soon as your concentrating on an issue that inspires you, suddenly it’s not work at all. It’s a thing that ignites a spark inside you, and you wind up going the extra mile to help make the project incredible.
Keeping that under consideration, you must find a theme with this t-shirt design that inspires anyone to make a move great. The theme could be anything from extreme sports to rock music. Anything is fair game.
Once you’ve decided on a theme, perform the necessary research to pinpoint the marked audience. Understanding what you are about designing for is important inside a killer design. Know whether your audience is female or male, 65 or 25, and what section of the world they live in. Know what they enjoy to wear, what colors, fonts and imagery they can be interested in. They are the things you must know and understand before putting pen to paper, or mouse at hand to get started on your design.
Now that you’ve found your theme and you know exactly who you’re designing for, it’s time to search for just a little inspiration. The place you go for this inspiration might vary drastically dependant upon your theme. For instance, it might be a visit to the mens portion of your local sporting good store, it could be browsing online for college style humor, or can be quite a trip to the coffee shop where your potential audience gathers each morning.
Get creative with the inspiration. In the long run your only as effective as what inspires you, so spend the time here, and create a concept that can turn heads and get people talking.
When putting together your file to start designing there are numerous points to consider. How big will the graphic be? Might it be printed on light, colored, or black material? Could it be printed digital or silk screened? If it’s silk screened, the number of colors is going to be printed? etc…
Create your new document with units set to inches since we’re working in print. 15 inches by 12 inches is often the largest available screen-size when screen-printing. When designing maintain your quantity of colors at 8 or fewer. The greater colors the larger the production cost, and a lot screen printers are not capable of handling over 8 screens.
For digital printing you don’t need to do a lot of prep work with print. Ink jet printers can print as many colors as required, a good photograph is fair game. Digital is great for small run jobs, but the majority likely, you may be screen printing a t-shirt design. In order to do that you will want to separate your colors into different layers. Screen printing involves printing each color separately, so the printer must access each color with your design.
In Adobe Photoshop it’s an easy few selecting your colors using the magic wand tool and copying them each with their own layer.
In Adobe Illustrator, it’s a little different, yet still just like easy.
The trick to color separations in Illustrator is incorporated in the Pathfinder palette ( Window | Pathfinder ). Select everything in your design and choose Trim from the Pathfinder palette. This basically removes every one of the artwork that is certainly unseen. In other words, pieces of objects which are behind other objects.
Now select one color with all the Magic Wand Tool (Y) and all of objects of that particular same color needs to be come selected and choose Unite in the Pathfinder palette.
Now, from the Layers palette create a new layer titled Separations, then create Sub Layers for every color from your design. After that you can copy (Cmd C) that color and Paste set up within the new layer to go that color to it’s own separate layer.
Upon having all colors moved onto their own layers you can switch off each layer to see the patient colors. This allows the printer to simply access each screen when printing.
A part of marketing and selling your designs is displaying them using product mockups. The beauty of mockups is it lets you present the look over a shirt well before you will have a printed shirt in hand. You can download the WeGraphics T-shirt Mockups here and here.
For the first design is probably not practical or cost-effective to print an inventory to have accessible. Especially because you are unclear what sells could be like for this particular design. Regardless, though, you need to know of the items printing alternatives are available.
As mentioned above one of the most traditional printing for t-shirts is screen printing. This method is one of the oldest printing methods around, with origins dating to first-century China, 27dexjpky the technologies have improved significantly consequently. This process involves dividing the shades in the design so that they can be separately.
Digital printing is a great method for handling lower run jobs. Some printers will print as little as 5 shirts at any given time. This can be excellent if you simply need a few designs available to show within a portfolio, or wear out and about. You can find no real color restrictions with digital printing. But, in my opinion, it doesn’t quite feel exactly like a conventional screen printed tee.
In past times couple of years when needed printers have begun to spring up on the web. Vendors like CafePress and SpreadShirt. These vendors permit you to upload your designs, open an online store, and possess your shirts printed upon order. It becomes an interesting solution for the one man design shop. Do your homework on these vendors, quality and experience can vary in one to another.
